The benefits of Sadaqah in Islam are boundless. As a mercy to humanity, Allah (SWT) has given us bountiful opportunities to gain reward for every good act that is made in order to benefit the world and all in it, for His (SWT) sake.

We know that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was very generous, giving his food, money, and belongings to the poor and often letting himself go hungry.

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the most generous of the men; and he was the most generous during the month of Ramadan when Jibril visited him every night and recited the Qur’an to him. During this period, the generosity of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) waxed faster than the rain bearing wind.”

(Bukhari and Muslim)

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the most generous of the men; and he was the most generous during the month of Ramadan when Jibril visited him every night and recited the Qur’an to him. During this period, the generosity of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) waxed faster than the rain bearing wind.”

(Bukhari and Muslim)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had impeccable character. Therefore, there is immense reward in following his exemplary behaviour.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Ahmad)

Sadaqah Benefits

There are also numerous other Hadith which highlight its importance and benefits of charity in Islam.
Sadaqah can act as a barrier between a person and a calamity that is destined for them.

During hardship

Giving Sadaqah at a time of hardship as well as ease will help a believer in their time of need. As Anas Bin Malik said, narrated by Bayhaqi:

“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Tirmidhi)

Does not decrease wealth

Some more benefits of Sadaqah is that it does not decrease one in wealth:

“There is not a day upon which the servant awakens but that two angels descend. One of them says: O Allah, repay one who spends in charity! The other says: O Allah, give destruction to one who withholds charity!” (Bukhari)

In the Hereafter

The benefits of Sadaqah also extend to the reward that lies in the hereafter for the believer who spends for the sake of Allah (SWT).

“Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan – it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.” [Qur’an 57:18]

Sadaqah removes sins

Sadaqah also acts as a purifier of sins. In a famous Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi)

On a daily basis, we can often become absent minded about our actions and easily commit sins. However, when we give Sadaqah consistently, we are shielding ourselves from the impact of our sins. Sins that we may not even be conscious of at the time.

One way to reap the benefits of Sadaqah is to use it to purify our Nafs (the self).

In this verse of the Qur’an, we are told by Allah (SWT):

“Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” [Qur’an 3:92]

This verse encourages the believer to reflect on what they truly love and desire of the dunya (this world), and then to give from it, no matter how difficult that may be – this is a good and true act of Sadaqah. However, for some it is hard to give money. Whereas for others, it is hard to give time. More importantly, no matter what you give, as long as it is for the sake of Allah (SWT), there is great reward in it.
