Throughout Syria’s 14 year-long crisis, perhaps no region has been more synonymous with the conflict than that of Yarmouk.

Originally built as a refugee camp for Palestinians, over time it grew into a densely populated residential neighbourhood. Once known as the ‘capital of the Palestinian diaspora’ in Syria, Yarmouk now lies in ruins, a broken shell of what used to be a thriving community.

Before the conflict began in 2011, Yarmouk was home to some 160,000 Palestinian refugees but relentless clashes and violent sieges led it its near total destruction.

Now, with the recent change in government, many residents are returning to their homes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have reported that close to 355,000 people have returned to Syria since the beginning of December 2024.

What they are returning to is a country crisis, but they are not alone. Islamic Relief has been supporting the people of Syria since 2011, and we will continue to help them as they begin the daunting task of rebuilding their shattered lives and communities. Help us support vulnerable Syrian communities by donating generously today.
