Ashwaq is a widow living with her 4 children in Yemen’s Taiz governorate. After her husband’s death, the 42-year-old became the family’s sole provider.
Without any income, Ashwaq is completely dependent on the generosity of others, and support from humanitarian organisations like Islamic Relief.
“Getting meat has become really tough for us, especially since we have no income,” Ashwaq explains. “The overall situation in the country is also challenging with rising prices and many people struggling. This makes it hard to get meat.
“We can only afford to have meat once a year when we receive the qurbani pack.”
In 2024, Ashwaq was one of 111, 700 people in Yemen who enjoyed meat from a qurbani parcel from Islamic Relief. The food provided not only a source of nutrition for her family, but also a moment to come together and celebrate Eid.
“Eid al-Adha is a special celebration for all Muslims around the world. We feel love and compassion during this time. It is a celebration from Allah (SWT).
“[Eid] offers a sense of calm after a year of hardship, helping to heal the pain and suffering we’ve experienced.
“The korbani meat packs provided by Islamic Relief are a wonderful idea. They help us truly celebrate Eid, and bring joy, especially to children in need and orphans. “These packs ensure that we have meat in our homes,” Ashwaq says.
