What is Eid Korban (Qurban)?

Korban (Qurban) is a sacrifice made in remembrance of Allah (SWT).

We replicate the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to Allah (SWT), showing his worship and devotion to his Lord.

We mark this on the holy day of Eid al Adha “Eid ul Adha”.

When is Eid Korban (Qurban)?

This year, Eid al Adha “Eid ul Adha” is expected to fall on Saturday 9th July 2022 (dependent on moon sightings).

Korban (Qurban) takes place after the Eid prayer on Eid al Adha “Eid ul Adha” – not before. Eid al-Adha lasts three days.

Any sacrifice made before Eid prayer counts as Sadaqah – not Korban (Qurban). Therefore, another sacrifice must be made to count as Korban (Qurban).

“Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before offering the Eid prayer, should slaughter another sacrifice in its place; and whoever has not slaughtered their sacrifice yet, should slaughter now”.

Here at Islamic Relief, you can donate right up until the end of the third day after Eid (13th of Hari Raya Haji “Dhul Hijjah”) before Maghreb salah.

What is Eid Salah?

Prayer is a crucial part of Eid celebrations. On this day, Muslims join in congregational prayer and give thanks to Allah (SWT). The Eid celebration lasts for three days and is welcomed by the Eid Salah (prayer). 

Following the Eid prayer on the first day of Eid al-Adha, we offer a sacrifice – Korban (Qurban) – to remember the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to Allah (SWT). 

A portion of this meat (from a sheep, goat, cow, or camel) then goes to help those in need. 

Where does prayer happen?

The Eid prayer, which takes place in the early morning (after Fajr) on the first day of Eid, is traditionally prayed in an open space or field subject to the weather conditions. The Eid prayer also takes place inside of mosques. Muslims are encouraged to pray in Jama’ah (congregation) with their local Muslim community on occasions such as Eid.
