Board of Trustees commences search for successor as Waseem Ahmad concludes four-year term

Birmingham, UK – Islamic Relief Worldwide today announced that CEO Waseem Ahmad will step down from his position at the end of September 2025, having concluded his four-year term leading the global humanitarian organisation.

During his tenure, Waseem has overseen significant developments in Islamic Relief’s global operations, achieving record growth and income that has enabled the organisation to reach more people around the world than ever before. He spearheaded the implementation of the organisation’s ambitious 10-year global strategy and coordinated emergency responses to major humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, Gaza, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria, Türkiye and Yemen.

As the first CEO to serve under Islamic Relief’s new governance model, Waseem has worked closely with the Islamic Relief family through the Family Council and International General Assembly, whilst also significantly raising the organisation’s international profile. His efforts were recognised earlier this year when His Majesty King Charles hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace celebrating Islamic Relief’s 40th anniversary.

Haroun Atallah, Chair of Islamic Relief Worldwide’s Board of Trustees, said: “On behalf of the Islamic Relief Worldwide Board of Trustees and the wider Islamic Relief family, I want to thank Waseem for his leadership and unwavering dedication to our mission and commitment to our values. His steadfast professionalism and effective leadership played a critical role in navigating unprecedented global challenges during this important period in our charity’s history, and I am personally grateful for his partnership with the Board.”

Waseem Ahmad commented: “It has been the greatest privilege of my career to serve Islamic Relief Worldwide alongside our incredible staff, volunteers and donors who make our humanitarian mission possible. Together, we have served our rightsholders at times of crises and for the long run, building lasting foundations for the world’s most vulnerable communities.”

Waseem will continue in his role through September 2025, with an organised transition to his successor planned as he steps down. The Board of Trustees has commenced the search process for the new CEO.

Further details about the succession process are available on the Islamic Relief Worldwide website.
